Thomas Binggeli joins D.C. United’s coaching staff from Servette FC in Switzerland’s top division, where he most recently served as a scout. Over a career spanning nearly three decades, Binggeli has held coaching and scouting roles across Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, and Egypt, establishing himself as a respected assistant coach within European football.
Born in Walliswil bei Wangen, Switzerland, Binggeli began his coaching career in 1997 with FC Klus-Balsthal before moving into assistant roles with FC Thun and Grasshopper Club Zurich in the Swiss Super League, and later 1. FC Köln in the German Bundesliga. He spent several seasons leading U-21 sides at Grasshopper Club Zurich and FC Aarau, guiding Aarau’s youth team to a 39-24-14 record from 2010-2013.
Binggeli first worked alongside René Weiler at FC Aarau, helping the club win the 2012-13 Swiss Challenge League title and secure promotion. The pair reunited at RSC Anderlecht, where they won the 2016-17 Belgian Pro League, the 2017 Belgian Super Cup, and advanced to the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals. The duo later found success together at Al Ahly SC in Egypt, capturing the 2018-19 Egyptian Super Cup and 2019-20 Egyptian Premier League title.
Most recently, Binggeli managed FC Solothurn from 2021-2024, leading the club to a 42-20-20 record before joining Servette FC’s scouting department. He now reunites with Weiler for a fifth time as D.C. United’s assistant coach.
Binggeli holds a UEFA Pro License (2015), a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and completed a self-study course in computer science, working in the field for 15 years. He speaks three languages and previously played for SC Derendingen and FC Solothurn.
