Álvaro Saborío to join Costa Rican National Team for 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches

WASHINGTON (Nov. 6, 2015) – D.C. United forward Álvaro Saborío has been called into the Costa Rican National Team for 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches on Nov. 13 vs. Haiti in San Jose, Costa Rica, and Nov. 17 at Panama in Panama City.

Saborío has four goals in 14 appearances (11 starts) in the regular season and the Audi 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs for D.C. United in 2015. The veteran forward scored in his debut for the Black-and-Red on July 26 following his acquisition from Real Salt Lake in exchange for Luis Silva. Saborío also scored in D.C. United’s first-ever match at Yankee Stadium against New York City FC on Aug. 13. When the teams met again at RFK Stadium on Oct. 2, he scored a game-winning goal that also clinched United’s berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Saborío has 35 career goals in 102 appearances for Costa Rica, making his debut in 2002. He is a veteran of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and he most recently appeared for Costa Rica in his fourth CONCACAF Gold Cup.
