Bill Hamid wins United 2016 Save of the Year

Between Bill Hamid (2014 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and United's first Homegrown signing) and Travis Worra (the second-year shot-stopper who filled in admirably for Hamid during the first part of 2016), United were deep at the goalkeeper position. This season, Hamid (12x) and Worra (4x)combined for 16 MLS Save of the Week nominations, keeping the Black-and-Red in matches almost every week. Be sure to follow United on Twitter for updates on the outcome, and stay tuned the rest of the week for more contests determining top assists, goals and moments of the 2016 season.

Bill Hamid v. Houston Dynamo | June 18

Bill Hamid re-established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the league after returning from a six-month knee injury. The goalkeeper proved to be the difference-maker in Houston, making a crucial save in the final minutes to preserve the 0-0 draw and get a vital point on the road for the Black-and-Red on June 18. The 25-year-old reacted quickly to get down to his right and get a crucial touch to push the ball past the post in the 93rd minute.

Bill Hamid v. Real Salt Lake | July 1

Hamid's double save against Real Salt Lake proved to be the differentiator for the Black-and-Red in a hard-fought 1-1 draw. Hamid recorded a season-high seven saves including an eye-catching double save to deny a Real Salt Lake goal in the first fifteen minutes of the match. His athleticism to get across the goal and make the initial save was impressive, but the shot-stopper had the awareness to make himself big and also deny the rebound.

Travis Worra v. New York Red Bulls | May 13

In his second MLS season, Worra found his feet and asserted himself as an important part of the D.C. United backline throughout the early stages of 2016. The first match against the New York Red Bulls yielded some high-caliber saves from the 24-year-old, including a double-save where Worra made himself big to deny Gonzalo VerĆ³n then reacted quickly and made a diving save to his left to stop Brazilian midfielder Felipeā€™s rebound attempt.

Winner | Bill Hamid v. New York Red Bulls | Sept. 11

Hamid was in fine form when he went up against  MLS Golden Boot winner Bradley Wright-Phillips in an emotionally-charged game against the New York Red Bulls on September 11. Hamid's world-class save to deny BWP and allow United to climb back into the game and rescue a hard-fought point, but his second showcased his footwork when BWP forced Hamid to scramble across his goal and get an important touch on a cheeky BWP effort.
