Audi to Fund the Planting of One New Tree for Every Fan in Attendance
WASHINGTON, D.C., (October 21, 2021) – D.C. United and Audi have partnered to introduce a first-of-its-kind sustainability themed match at Audi Field when the Black-and-Red host New York Red Bulls on October 27 at 7:30 p.m. EST as part of their shared commitment to creating a more electrified and sustainable future.
“When we moved into Audi Field back in 2018, we made a commitment to sustainability, which began by delivering a LEED Gold Certified stadium,” said Danita Johnson, President of Business Operations for D.C. United. “We’re pleased to continue to work closely with a valued partner like Audi to keep the focus on improving the health of our world and promoting environmentally-friendly decision making with our first-ever sustainability themed match and supporting initiatives.”
Sunday, October 24 beginning at 12:00 p.m. EST, D.C. United will work alongside ForestPlanet to host a Drive-Through Electronics Recycling Event outside Audi Field on Audi Drive. All community members are encouraged to bring their old electronic items to ensure proper disposal takes place. For more information on this event, please visit here.
On match day, Audi has committed to fully fund the planting of one new tree in the Irente Planting Site for every fan that attends the game. The Irente Planting site is located in the Western Usambara Mountain region of Tanzania and the planting of trees through this initiative will result in improved living conditions and agriculture. Additionally, 5,000 fans will receive Eco-Seed Globes to take home with them upon exit of the stadium following the match. The globes come inside a reusable canvas bag with an instruction card made of recycled material.
“Audi is proud to collaborate with a like-minded partner like D.C. United to host this first ever sustainability-themed night at Audi Field,” said Adam Perez, Audi of America experiential marketing specialist. “Providing these experiences offers soccer fans and the greater Washington D.C. community the opportunity to participate in our commitment to creating a more sustainable future.”
In May of 2020, D.C. United completed the second largest solar panel installation for a soccer-specific Major League Soccer stadium. The 1,700-panel solar system at Audi Field is also the fifth largest across the entire District of Columbia. The system, which can be seen spanning the stadium’s canopies and rooftop generates over 787,000 kilowatt hours of renewable energy on-site and reduces CO2 emissions by 556 metric tons annually, equating to the amount of electricity required to power 95 homes for an entire year.
