WASHINGTON, D.C., (October 7, 2023) ā€“ D.C. United have announced that the club and Head Coach Wayne Rooney have mutually agreed to part ways.

ā€œWe have spoken with Wayne and agreed it is best for us to part ways at this time. This decision creates the avenue for our next General Manager to have the full opportunity to impart a new philosophy and structure onto our sporting operations, which begins with the critical identification of a Head Coach who will best align with this,ā€ said Jason Levien CEO and Co-Chairman of D.C. United. ā€œWe are grateful to Wayne Rooney for all he has done for our club and for soccer in the Nationā€™s Capital, first as a D.C. United player and captain and most recently as our coach. He remains an important part of the D.C. United family and a valued and cherished friend.ā€Ā

Wayne Rooney was appointed Head Coach of the Black-and-Red on July 12, 2022, when he joined the club following a two-year stay as the Manager of Derby County in the English Championship. Despite the club falling short of the 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs, Rooney improved D.C. Unitedā€™s point tally in his first and only full season at the helm, finishing with a total of 40 points and a record of 10-10-14.Ā

Rooney joined D.C. United in June 2018 as a Designated Player. During his time with the Black-and-Red, Rooney appeared in 48 matches, scored 23 goals and assisted 15 others. He was voted MLS Best XI in 2018, an All-Star in 2019, and was an MLS MVP finalist in 2018.
