WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 1, 2023) – D.C. United will celebrate Women’s History Month through a series of community-driven activities in collaboration with local nonprofits Sasha Bruce Youthwork and House of Ruth, community partners, King-Greenleaf Recreation Center and Amidon-Bowen Elementary School, and through a dedicated theme night celebrating women and girls on March 11 when the Black-and-Red host Orlando City SC.
The club’s March 11 match against Orlando City SC – which kicks-off at 7:30 p.m. EST at Audi Field – will feature a pre-match women and girls networking event, a female national anthem singer, and members of a girl’s youth soccer team as player escorts. Additionally, the club’s Party at the Pitch pre-event tailgate located outside Gate A will include performances from female DJs and musicians, as well as tabling opportunities for women-owned businesses, and activities like face and/or nail painting.
As D.C. United continue to focus on empowering, servicing, and providing women and girls with opportunities within the community, the club have formed relationship with various community partners to deliver impactful efforts throughout the month and beyond. Additional information follows:
- Book Donation to Amidon-Bowen Elementary School and King-Greenleaf Recreation Center: D.C. United have partnered with local female-owned bookstores to purchase books by women and/or focused on women and girl empowerment, which will then be donated to Southwest DC neighbors, Amidon-Boden Elementary school and the King-Greenleaf Recreation Center. The club will also be starting a library in the front office for staff to borrow and donate books that speak to the club’s values and diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.
- Pack and Provide Female Hygiene Kits for Youth in Partnership with Sasha Bruce Youthwork: D.C. United will pack and donate female hygiene kits to youth who are serviced by Sasha Bruce Youthwork, the only organization in the DMV that provides safe homes and access to a supportive and stable path forward, as well as professional and educational opportunities.
- Professional Development Workshop Servicing House of Ruth: In partnership with local transitional program, House of Ruth, D.C. United will deliver a professional development workshop, inclusive of resume consultation, mock interviews, and professional headshots. Additionally, the club will host a business/business casual clothing drive to help ensure women in DC have access to clothing for interviews.
