D.C. United Sign Former Black-and-Red Midfielder Yamil Asad

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 2, 2023) ā€“ D.C. United have signed former Black-and-Red midfielder Yamil Asad. The Argentine signed a one-year contract through 2023 with options in 2024 and 2025.

ā€œYamil loves this club and has been steadfast in his desire to return,ā€ Dave Kasper, D.C. United President of Soccer Operations, said. ā€œI've always been impressed with how Yamil leaves it all on the field and bleeds for the shirt. We look forward to getting him back on the field.ā€Ā 

The 28-year-old rejoins the Black-and-Red after spending the 2022 season with Club Deportivo Universidad CatĆ³lica in the Chilean first division.Ā  He appeared in 13 matches, scoring one goal for La CatĆ³lica in a 2-1 league win over UniĆ³n EspaƱola on Oct. 19, 2022.Ā  Asad was out of contract at the end of the season.

Prior to this, Asad spent one season on loan with Atlanta United in 2017 and three seasons with D.C. United in 2018, 2020, and 2021. In 2017, Asad played 32 matches for Atlanta United, scoring seven goals and recording a team-high 13 assists.Ā  The following season, the Black-and-Red acquired the midfielder on loan from Club Atletico VĆ©lez Sarsfield in the Argentine first division on Feb. 13, 2018.Ā  Asad was an integral part of the Black-and-Redā€™s offense in 2018, scoring nine goals, and recording eight assists in 30 MLS appearances.Ā  The Argentine scored his first goal for the club in his D.C. United debut on March 3, 2018, in a 1-1 draw with Orlando City SC.Ā  Asad scored the first ever goal at Audi Field in a 3-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps on July 14, 2018.

After returning to Club Atletico VĆ©lez Sarsfield and spending the 2019 season in Argentina, Asad returned to D.C. United in 2020.Ā  The midfielder finished the season with three goals and two assists in 23 matches played while drawing the fifth most fouls in MLS with 49. The subsequent 2021 season, Asad played in 16 matches, scoring two goals and recording one assist before moving to CD Universidad CatĆ³lica in the Chilean first division.Ā  Across three seasons, Asad scored 14 goals and recorded eight assists in 72 appearances for D.C. United.

The Argentine native is a product of Club Atletico VĆ©lez Sarsfield Academy and is the son of former VĆ©lez Sarsfield player, Omar Asad, who won eight Argentina Primera DivisiĆ³n titles and one Copa Libertadores.Ā  Asad made his senior debut for Club Atletico VĆ©lez Sarsfield in a 2-1 loss to Club AtlĆ©tico Colon on April 14, 2013.Ā  He scored his first career goal on Feb. 21, 2015 in a 2-1 league win over Club Mutual Crucero del Norte of the Argentine first division.Ā  In total, the midfielder scored four goals and recorded 5 assists with Club AtlĆ©tico VĆ©lez Sarsfield in 57 matches.
