Mohamed “KingCJ0” Alioune Diop, D.C. United’s professional eMLS representative, finished in third place in the qualifiers for the 2021 eMLS League Series One before being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the competition.

The qualification process consisted of each player playing 14 matches over the course of two weeks. Of the 27 players (one for each MLS team), only the top eight advanced to the knockout stages for League Series One. KingCJ0 had an impressive qualifying round, winning 10 of his 14 matches to earn 30 points overall and finish in third place. These qualifying matches will also go towards the overall standings which determine who qualifies for the final tournament of the eMLS season, the eMLS Cup.

In the quarterfinal round of the knockout stage of League Series One, KingCJ0 lost 8-7 on aggregate over the course of two high-scoring, competitive matches against Toronto FC representative, PhilB94. The match was one of the most viewed of the entire competition, totaling over 30,000 viewers on Twitch at its peak.

KingCJ0 was pleased with his overall performance in the qualifying matches but acknowledged his disappointment at losing in the knockout round of the tournament.

“I finished a point short of qualifying for the eMLS Cup last season, and I knew coming into my second season competing in the eMLS that I would have to improve,” KingCJ0, said. “I’m happy with my performance in the qualifying matches of the eMLS League Series One, but I wish I could have gotten a better result in my quarterfinal match. I know the experience of being at this stage of the competition will help me get a better result in the future.”

After both League Series are completed, the top 11 players in the overall standings will advance to the eMLS playoffs. The winner of the playoff rounds from that point on will be crowned the eMLS Cup Champion. A D.C. United eMLS player has never qualified for the eMLS Cup playoffs. KingCJ0 currently sits in third place after League Series One.

eMLS League Series Two is scheduled to start on February 2 with the eMLS Cup set to run from March 16-21.
