D.C. United has announced that forward Fabián Espíndola is expected to miss six weeks with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee sustained in United’s 4-2 win at the Montreal Impact on June 11.

Espíndola suffered the injury seconds after kickoff on a tackle by Impact midfielder Felipe Martins. Espíndola left the game at halftime. With seven goals and eight assists, the Argentine attacker has been involved in more goals than any player in Major League Soccer this season.

Currently in first place in the Eastern Conference, United (7-4-4, 25 points) will return to MLS regular season action following the league’s World Cup break against the Western Conference-leading Seattle Sounders (10-3-2, 32 points) on June 28 at RFK Stadium.
