At the end of the 2014 MLS regular season, D.C. United earned 59 totals points with a record of 17-9-8. In 2012, the Black-and-Red finished with 58 points, making this year’s total the most in Club history.
Throughout MLS history, the number of teams, conferences and games played has changed. In the post-shootout era—2000-present—the regular season consisted of somewhere between 26-34 games played. Since increasing to 34 games in 2011, when the Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers joined the League, United has won 17 games twice (2012 and 2014). Seventeen games won is a Club record, although both times these were earned in 34-game seasons.
When comparing win percentage, though, it still stacks up against previous years, though it isn’t a record. In 2007, D.C. United finished the regular season in first place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 16-7-7 after 30 games played. That’s a win percentage of .53. This is the Club record, but this year’s win percentage of .50 is tied for second with the 2012 and 2005 squads—the ’05 team won 16 of its 32 regular season games.
