What to Know:
Historically, D.C. United and the New York Red Bulls have met 5 times in the U.S. Open Cup, including last year's match-up on May 10, 2022, that sent the Black-and-Red out of the tournament.
With Wayne Rooney at the helm in 2023, D.C. United have their eyes on a deeper run in the competition and will aim to lock their place in the Round of 16 tonight with a second tournament victory.
D.C. United has bolstered the squad in recent weeks by acquiring Cristian DƔjome from the Vancouver Whitecaps and signing Erik Hurtado from San Antonio FC of the USL Championship. While DƔjome made his Black-and-Red debut for the club over the weekend against FC Cincinnati, Hurtado will look to get his first D.C. United minutes in tonight's match.
D.C. United reached the Round of 32 after a 1-0 victory against the USL Championship's Richmond Kickers. The match was a tale of two penalties as Yamil Asad was able to convert from the spot, while an Alex Bono penalty save on the other end was enough to lock in a victory after 90 minutes of action at Audi Field.
This will be the first match for RBNY under new head coach, Troy Lesesne who was named to the position after the club and former manager, Gerhard Struber agreed to part ways. Winless in their last seven matches, the Red Bull squad is looking to start a new chapter and it's up to the D.C. United squad to handle a growing sense of urgency from their Atlantic rivals.
