United would eventually find an equalizer in the 67th minute through Christian Benteke from the penalty spot, after Ted Ku-DiPietro dribbled into the penalty area drawing a foul from NYCFC midfielder James Sands. This challenge was reviewed by VAR and D.C. United capitalized on a defensive lapse from New York. Despite pressure from NYCFC late in the game, D.C. United goalkeeper Alex Bono stood firm, making critical saves to ensure the Black-and-Red secured a valuable point at Audi Field.
