D.C. United are set to play against Minnesota United FC in their 27th match of the 2021 Major League Soccer (MLS) Regular Season on Wednesday, September 29, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET. D.C. United will seek to maintain their dominance at home after recording their ninth win at Audi Field in 2021 on Saturday.
In their last match, D.C. United won 4-2 against FC Cincinnati. The Black-and-Red had a strong attacking performance that allowed them to maintain their unbeaten streak against Cincinnati. Julian Gressel was a key factor in the win after recording three assists in the game. In the seventh minute, Paul Arriola scored his first of the night from a corner kick routine to open the scoring. In the 21st minute, Gressel found Steven Birnbaum on a set piece and his header beat the Cincinnati keeper. Arriola secured his brace in the 41st minute when he rifled home his shot after a deflected cross from Gressel found him alone at the back post.
After three substitutions at halftime, the Black-and-Red started the second half with the same intensity. D.C. United scored their fourth goal of the evening in the 72nd minute by Nigel Robertha to take their lead to 4-0. In the final 10 minutes, United conceded two goals from Brandon Vázquez and former midfielder Luciano Acosta to give Cincinnati hope but Bill Hamid and the defense made some important defensive plays to preserve the two-goal cushion and get a critical three-points
D.C. United have an all-time record of 1-2-0 against Minnesota United FC. The last time these two teams played was on April 28, 2019, at Allianz Field, in an evenly fought match, where Minnesota ended up winning 1-0 with a goal at the 82nd minute by Minnesota’s ex-forward Ángelo Rodríguez.
Head Coach Hernán Losada on the Upcoming Match:
“When we play at home, it's a nice atmosphere. The connection between us and the fans is amazing, and we're going to need it. I hope we can have a lot of fans on Wednesday night. I know it's not easy, that people need to wake up early the day after, but it's going to be very important for us. The more fans we have, the more energy we have to win the game.”
