D.C. United are set to play their third match of the 2021 Major League Soccer Regular Season against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, May 1 at PayPal Park in San Jose, California. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 p.m. EST. The Black-and-Red will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season against the New England Revolution on April 24 and continue their strong defensive displays in San Jose on Saturday night.
In their last match against the New England Revolution, D.C. United conceded a goal early in the second half and lost 1-0 at Gillette Stadium. It was a scrappy and physical match throughout, as the two long-time rivals committed a total of 39 fouls between them. The two sides played a mostly uneventful first half with neither team able to create many clear chances. Julian Gressel got into some dangerous positions for United on the right side of the field but was unable to pick out the crucial final pass.
The Revolution got their goal in the 48th minute when Brandon Bye sent in a cross from the right flank that took an unlucky deflection off United center back Brendan Hines-Ike and into his own net. United pushed for an equalizer for the remainder of the second half but were unable to find the breakthrough. Their best chance came in the 69th minute when Russell Canouse connected on a header from an Edison Flores corner, only to see his effort saved. In the end, New England hung on to win 1-0.
This will be the 41st MLS Regular Season match between the Earthquakes and D.C. United. United have an all-time record of 15-17-8 record against San Jose and a 5-8-7 record on the road. The last time these two sides faced off was on June 1, 2019 when they played to a 1-1 draw at Audi Field. Luciano Acosta scored an unassisted equalizer in the 67th minute to help earn the Black-and-Red a point. United will look to improve on their record against the Earthquakes and get three points on the road on Saturday night.
