In their 30th match of the 2021 Major League Soccer (MLS) regular season, D.C. United fell 3-2 against the New England Revolution in a hard-fought match at Audi Field. United dropped to seventh place with 41 points in the Eastern Conference with four matches left to play.
Two minutes into the game, Ola Kamara had his first look at goal. Kamara took a low-driven shoot that Matt Turner got a hand on to send it out for a corner kick. In the 12th minute, Kamara made a run down the left flank into the box, and played Drew Skundrich whose shot was blocked.
In the 26th minute, the New England Revolution played a ball over United’s defense to find Adam Buksa, but Bill Hamid made the diving save to put it out of danger. Minutes later, Nigel Robertha beat his defender, cut on to his right foot and got a shot off, but Turner made the save once again. The teams headed into halftime with the scores deadlocked at 0-0.
The Black-and-Red started the second half on the front foot when Julian Gressel played Kamara in the box and the Norwegian was able to get a shot off, but Turner reacted quickly to keep the Black-and-Red off the scoresheet. D.C. United found the go ahead goal a few minutes later in the 51st minute when Skundrich, found Kamara on the counterattack. His shot hit the far post, but Robertha was there to put away the rebound to give the Black-and-Red a 1-0 lead.
New England responded 10 minutes later in the 61st minute when Tommy McNamara's cross in the run of play found Buksa, who headed the ball out of Hamid’s reach for the equalizer. Three minutes later, Carles Gil cut to his left foot and fired into the left corner to give the Revs the 2-1 lead.
In the 79th minute, New England added to their tally when Buksa's back heel found Bou and his deflected shot snuck into the left corner. In the third minute of stoppage time, second-half substitute Kevin Paredes found space down the left flank and his pinpoint cross found Ramón Ábila, who headed home to make it 3-2. Despite the late goal, the Black-and-Red were unable to find the equalizer and the match ended 3-2.
