In their 29th match of the 2021 Major League Soccer (MLS) regular season, D.C. United tied 0-0 with Nashville SC at Audi Field. United remain in sixth place with 41 points in the Eastern Conference with five matches left to play.
Three minutes into the match, the Black-and-Red almost found the back of the net. Golden boot leader Ola Kamara took a shot from outside the box that beat the Nashville defense and former Black-and-Red goalkeeper Joe Willis but was denied by the woodwork.
At the 30 minute mark, Gressel took a corner kick for D.C. United that was headed by Nigel Robertha but was denied by Willis once more. Minutes later, Andy Najar made a run into the attacking third and his volley went just wide. However, after a dominant half from United, the teams headed into halftime scoreless.
In the second half, the Black-and-Red remained on the front foot, although the first clear chance of the half didn't come until the 65th minute. D.C. United earned a free kick that was taken by Gressel, who put the ball in the area and was cleared but only as far as the top of the box. After winning the rebound, the ball found Joseph Mora, who was making a run down the left flank and his cross was headed on target, but Willis was able to push it out. The ball ricocheted and was headed a second time at close range by Russell Canouse but D.C. United was denied once again.
After 80 minutes of not seeing much action, Bill Hamid came up with his biggest save of the match by blocking Hany Mukhtar's shot in the 82nd minute to keep Nashville off the scoreboard.
In the dying minutes of the match, D.C. United continued pushing to find the breakthrough and created multiple set-piece opportunities. Despite United's late offensive attempts, they were unable to convert, ending the match 0-0.
