A standout career at the University of San Francisco wasn’t the only thing Miguel Aguilar left behind when he chose to chase his dream in the nation’s capital. The 5’9” winger left his family and then-girlfriend, Erin, to begin his career for the Black-and-Red after being drafted 17th overall in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.
But, after Erin moved east in September of last year to be with Aguilar after finishing up her degree, he saw another dream come true. The two met their freshman year of college at USF, but did not begin dating until their sophomore year. Erin now works as a tutor for middle school and high school-aged students in the Annandale area and is able to attend all of United’s home games. On Wednesday, April 20, the long-time couple and college sweethearts married.
“I got a good sense of what it was like to live with her and live together, and it was something we were serious about so we needed to make it official,” Aguilar said.
His first call was to Erin’s dad to ask for his blessing, and then to her mom, whom he invited to be there when he asked the life-changing question. Aguilar proposed to his future wife following United’s match at LA Galaxy, in front of a prepared camera crew of loved ones.
The two officially tied the knot in front of a smaller audience, but with a few familiar faces. United goalkeeper Travis Worra and second-year defender Luke Mishu were amongst the special few invited, along with Aguilar’s parents and Erin’s dad, step-mom and close cousins from the area.
“He [Aguilar] texted Luke at 2 p.m. and said ‘Hey I’m getting married at 3:15, do you and Travis want to come to my wedding?’” Worra laughed. He donned his special button down and socks for his duty as the ring bearer, while Mishu looked on with a few tears (allegedly).
Mr. and Mrs. Aguilar hope to have a bigger ceremony closer to Erin’s family in her home state of Hawaii, potentially during the offseason, but for now they are enjoying their time as newlyweds.
