In a second-round NCAA tournament game with a number of D.C. United Academy players on the field and on the bench, the University of Maryland (11-5-5) defeated the University of Virginia (10-5-3) at Ludwig Field Sunday night 1-0.
Freshman forward Eryk Williamson scored the only goal (and his fifth in as many games) off a free kick in the 38th minute, ending the season of former United Under-18 captain Patrick Foss and his Cavalier teammates.
Along with Foss, who played 65 minutes, Virginia junior Marcus Salandy-Defour played 90 and Jean-Christophe Koffi, a freshman, put in a thirty minute shift.
For the Terrapins, Williamson played 83 minutes, junior goalkeeper Cody Neidermeier finished the game with two saves, Suli Dainkeh (Jr.) and Cody Albrecht (graduate school) both played the entire game and DJ Reeves (Fr.) played a quick seven minutes off the bench. Freshman Jorge Calix and junior Michael Sauers did not play, but appeared in 14 and 9 games this season, respectively.
While there won't be as many United Academy alumni in the Terrapins' next game against Notre Dame next Sunday Nov. 29, the matchup still holds some importance; D.C. United and former Fighting Irish defender Luke Mishu beat UMD in the NCAA final two years ago.
