D.C. United earned a dramatic 2-1 victory over Toronto FC at Audi Field on Saturday night, with forward Tai Baribo converting a stoppage-time penalty to secure all three points in front of the home crowd. The result moves the Black-and-Red to 5-5-7 with 22 points in the Eastern Conference and keeps D.C. United in playoff contention with the season entering its final stretch.
Head Coach René Weiler made one change to the starting XI from Wednesday's 1-1 draw at Houston Dynamo FC, with defender Kye Rowles returning to the lineup in place of Sean Nealis. D.C. United lined up with goalkeeper Sean Johnson behind a back four of Silvan Hefti, captain Lucas Bartlett, Kye Rowles and Keisuke Kurokawa. Brandon Servania and Andre Dozzell anchored the midfield, with Dozzell making his home debut. Jackson Hopkins and João Peglow provided width on the flanks, while Tai Baribo partnered Louis Munteanu in the attack.
D.C. United controlled much of the opening half, creating sustained pressure in the attacking third and forcing Toronto onto the back foot. Hopkins tested Toronto goalkeeper Luka Gavran twice inside the opening 13 minutes, and Peglow saw an effort from the center of the box climb over the crossbar following a fast break. Johnson was equal to Toronto's early looks, denying Derrick Etienne Jr. in the fourth minute, Dániel Sallói in the ninth and Emilio Aristizábal in the 35th. The breakthrough came in the 41st minute when Toronto right wing back Kobe Franklin headed into his own net to put the Black-and-Red in front. D.C. United went into the interval 1-0 ahead after a disciplined first-half performance on both sides of the ball.
Toronto pressed after the break and Johnson again proved decisive, saving Jackson Gilman's header from an Alonso Coello cross in the 55th minute before producing back to back stops on Djordje Mihailovic in the 66th and 67th minutes. Weiler turned to his bench in the 65th minute, introducing midfielder Jared Stroud for Peglow and midfielder Matti Peltola for Hopkins. Toronto found the equalizer in the 76th minute when Theo Corbeanu turned in a left-footed finish from very close range following a set piece. Defender Sean Nealis replaced Rowles in the 80th minute, with midfielder Hosei Kijima entering for Servania at the same time, and forward Nathan Ordaz came on for Munteanu in the 85th minute. The decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time. A VAR review in the 90+8th minute awarded D.C. United a penalty after Toronto defender Jackson Gilman fouled Dozzell inside the area, and Baribo stepped up in the 90+10th minute to convert into the bottom left corner, sending Audi Field into a frenzy.
Johnson was the difference for long stretches, finishing with six saves across the 90 minutes and keeping the Black-and-Red in front through Toronto's strongest spell of the second half. Munteanu forced three saves out of Gavran and stretched the Toronto back line throughout his 85 minutes. Dozzell marked his home debut by winning the penalty that decided the match, and Baribo's composure from the spot delivered D.C. United's fifth win of the 2026 MLS regular season.
D.C. United improved their all-time regular season record against Toronto FC to 19-13-13, including a 9-4-9 mark at home against the Reds. D.C. United remain at Audi Field on Saturday, August 1 to host Nashville SC. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
