D.C. United announced today four nomineesfor the 2011 Hall of Tradition inductionceremony. Historic Black-and-Red playersRoy Lassiter, Carlos Llamosa, John Maessner, and Richie Williams are thecontenders for this prestigious honor.
One of the most potent scoring threats in Major LeagueSoccer history, forward Roy Lassiter will always be a part of D.C. United lore.Boasting back-to-back 18-goal campaigns for the Black-and-Red in 1998 and 1999,Lassiter was a key factor in the club¹s 1998 Champions’ Cup and InterAmericanCup victories, as well as the 1999 MLS Cup and Supporters Shield titles. Herepresented the Black-and-Red in the 1998 and 1999 MLS All-Star Games andfinished his United career third in League goals scored (36).
A D.C. United star from 1996-2000, defender CarlosLlamosa is still remembered for his physical ability to halt opposing attacksand playing skill to return the ball into dangerous positions for his club.While with the Black-and-Red, he was a part of three MLS Cup titles (1996, 1997and 1999), a U.S. Open Cup championship (1996), two Supporters¹ Shields (1997and 1999) and the 1998 Champions’ Cup and InterAmerican Cup victories. A 1999MLS All-Star selection, Llamosa finished his United career with 83 appearances(75 starts) in League play.
A mid-season signing during D.C. United¹s firstseason, midfielder John Maessner established his presence along the flankthroughout his career in the Nation's Capital. Maessner wore the Black-and-Redin two stints between 1996 and 2000. During that time, he was a part of threeMLS Cup titles (1996, 1997 and 1999), a U.S. Open Cup championship (1996) andtwo Supporters¹ Shields (1997 and 1999). Maessner finished his United careerwith 73 appearances (42 starts), seven goals and 14 assists in League play.
A never-say-die player and original member of D.C.United, midfielder Richie Williams is best remembered for his appetite for theball and his dogged tackling. Williams represented the club during six of theeight seasons he played in Major League Soccer (1996-2000 and 2002). While withthe Black-and-Red, he was a part of three MLS Cup titles (1996, 1997 and 1999),a U.S. Open Cup championship (1996), two Supporters¹ Shields (1997 and 1999)and the 1998 Champions¹ Cup and InterAmerican Cup victories.
