United midfielder Ulises Segura has been called up to the Costa Rican National Team for their upcoming matches against Mexico and Columbia. Segura will be looking for his eighth cap for Los Ticos, and his first March 27 in an international friendly against Tunisia.
With the Black-and-Red this season, Segura has made 19 appearances with 11 starts, and has scored two goals and one assist. The midfielder has been a steady presence on the flanks and both of Segura's two goals this season have come at key moments for United.
Segura's first goal with the Black-and-Red came in the first minute of their match against the Columbus Crew on April 14 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial stadium. The goal was the third fastest goal in United history and ultimately proved to be the game-winner as United held off the Crew after being reduced to 10 men.
His second goal was a crucial equalizer at Audi Field against Minnesota United on Sept. 12. The goal brought the Black-and-Red level in a match where Minnesota had them on the back foot and set the table for Darren Mattocks' dramatic game winner late in the second half.
Internationally, Segura has seven caps with Costa Rica and has started for Los Ticos three times. He played 33 minutes in Costa Rica's 1-0 loss to Tunisia on March 27 in his last call up with the national team.
Segura is one of five MLS players to be called up by Costa Rica for their upcoming matches including Vancouver's Kendall Watson, Minnesota's Francisco Calvo, Portland's David Guzmán and NYCFC's Ronald Matarrita.
