What to Know About the 2022 Capital Cup, presented by XDC Network

D.C. United and Audi Field are set to host the second annual Capital Cup, presented by XDC Network with matches scheduled for June 1, 4, and 7. 

The Black-and-Red lifted the inaugural Capital Cup trophy in 2021 after defeating Costa Rican Primera División side Liga Deportiva Alajuelense 2-0 over 2 legs. 

This year, D.C. United will compete against 16-time Salvadoran Champions, Club Deportivo Águila and 5-time Guatemalan Liga Nacional Champions, Club Xelajú MC. Each team is set to play each other once. The side with the most points after all matches have been played will be crowned the champion. If two teams are level on points, the following tiebreaker rules take effect in the order below to determine the winner. If multiple teams are still unable to be separated, then the trophy will be shared. 

  • Best goal difference 
  • Most goals scored 
  • Head-to-head result between the teams level on points

What to Know About Águila 

Founded in 1926 in San Miguel, Club Deportivo Águila is one of the most successful clubs in El Salvador football history. 

The club has lifted the top prize in El Salvador 16 times, producing some of the nation’s best talent along the way–including some D.C. United fans might be very familiar with. Raúl Díaz Arce and Eliseo Quintanilla, both mainstays in the Salvadoran National team, had very successful stints at both clubs.

After finishing second in the league last season, Águila are in the midst of preparing for its 2022/23 season. 

What to Know About Xelajú 

With nearly a century-long history in Quetzaltenango, Xelajú boasts one of the largest fan bases in Central America, with an almost century-long history in Quetzaltenango. 

Their 2021/22 Liga Nacional campaign concluded on May 8th, and on May 24th they hired Marvin Armarini Villatoro as manager. Saturday will mark his first match at the helm, when his side takes on Águila at 7:30PM in their opening match of the Capital Cup.
