United defender Steve Birnbaum took the Polar Plunge with Special Olympics D.C. athletes on Saturday at Nationals Park in southwest D.C.
Birnbaum was part of a select group of people who had the opportunity to take the Plunge into an icy pool at Nationals Park to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics D.C.
Birnbaum was joined by other notable plungers which included Mary Davis CEO of Special Olympics North America, Sam Shriver, grandson of the founder of Special Olympics International (the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver), Adam Epstein, producer of the Sports Junkies and members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department. In total, SODC had close to 300 plungers on Saturday.
Saturday’s event helped raise more than $200,000 for Special Olympics D.C. and its 1,600 athletes. Over the four years that they’ve been doing the Polar Plunge locally, more than $733,000 has been raised.
