To celebrate National Teacher Day, D.C. United recognized thirteen Alexandria City Public Schools āTeacher of the Yearā nominees for their accomplishments during the 2016-17 school year. The event took place on Tuesday, May 9, at the Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology in Alexandria, VA.
The program kicked off with a short assembly for students led by United defender Taylor Kemp and midfielder Patrick Nyarko. During the assembly, the players shared their most memorable stories about their favorite teachers with the 200-plus students in attendance. Kemp and Nyarko also helped introduce the thirteen āTeacher of the Yearā nominees, who represent schools across the Alexandria City Public School system.
āIt was a great experience yesterday, teachers do some much for us,ā Nyarko said. āTo be a student-athlete was pretty hard and having teachers show me the love and care that they did, got to me where I am now, and for that I will we always be appreciative to teachers."
The event concluded with a catered lunch provided by Sterling based Cuisine Solutions, where Kemp and Nyarko participated as guest servers for all teachers in attendance.
āACPS was truly honored to be chosen by D.C. United for their acknowledgement of Teacher Appreciation Day,ā ACPS Director of Communications Helen Lloyd said. āOur teachers were treated like guests of honor by the club and their partner Cuisine Solutions. It is always good to honor a teacher on Teacher Appreciation Day, but United did this in style.ā In addition to the visit, D.C. United will host a group of teachers at RFK Stadium on May 13 as the team takes on the Philadelphia Union.
