2018 (D.C. United): Wayne Rooney, Manchester United and the England National Team’s all-time leading scorer, joined the Black-and-Red on June 28, 2018. He signed a three-and-a-half year deal as D.C. United’s newest Designated Player. The Liverpool native made his first appearance as a 58th-minute substitute during the Audi Field inaugural match on July 14. He recorded his first career MLS assist in the 78th minute of his debut to seal a 3-1 win for United in their first match in club history at Audi Field. Rooney scored his first goal for the club on July 28 against the Colorado Rapids when he slotted the ball past former Manchester United teammate, Tim Howard, in the 33rd minute on the way to a 2-1 Black-and-Red win. Rooney scored his first MLS brace in a 4-1 win against the Portland Timbers on Aug. 15 when he scored in the 43rd and 68th minutes, respectively. Rooney had a resounding impact on team results with the team recording a 12-4-4 record with him on the field compared to the 2-7-5 record before his arrival. He collected points in 11 of his 20 MLS appearances and led the team on a 10-game unbeaten streak to end the regular season. Rooney set a club record for the most braces in a season with four, achieving the feat against Portland (Aug. 15), Montreal (Sep. 29), Chicago (Oct. 7), and NYCFC (Oct. 21). Rooney finished the season ranked first for the club in overall shots (71), shots on goal (31), and goals scored (12). These contributions earned Rooney a 2018 Landon Donovan MLS MVP nomination, two Alcatel MLS Player of the Week awards (Weeks 25 and 34), October Player of the Month, and four inclusions in the MLS Team of the Week.
2017-2018 (Everton): Rooney returned to his boyhood club on July 9, 2017. He scored in his debut for Everton beating Stoke City 1-0 at Goodison Park. Rooney went on to score his 200th Premier League goal in a 1-1 draw against Manchester City.
2016-2017 (Manchester United): Rooney became the league’s third player to achieve 100 Premier League assists when he set up Zlatan Ibrahimovic twice in a 3-1 victory over Swansea City. On Jan. 7, 2017, Rooney scored against Reading in the third round of the FA Cup to tie Sir Bobby Charlton as Manchester United’s top goal scorer of all time. He surpassed Charlton on Jan. 21, 2017, scoring his 250th goal for Manchester United from a free kick against Stoke City. Rooney was awarded a Golden Boot to acknowledge him becoming the club’s all-time leading goal scorer.
2015-2016 (Manchester United): Rooney scored a hat trick in the second leg of the club’s Champions League playoff match against Club Brugge. He tied Andy Cole with 187 Premier League goals by scoring in a 3-0 road win over Everton. The Englishman made his 500th appearance for Manchester United against Norwich City on Dec. 19, 2015. He took sole possession of second place on the Premier league’s top scorer list on Jan. 2, 2016 in 2-1 win over Swansea City. Rooney won the 2016 FA Cup Final beating Crystal Palace in extra time by a score line of 2-1.
2014-2015 (Manchester United): Rooney became the third highest Premier League goal scorer of all-time passing Thierry Henry with 176 goals on Sept. 27, 2014 when he finished in a 2-1 win against West Ham. Rooney was voted as United’s Player of the Month for December. On March 15, 2015 Rooney scored a brace in a 2-0 victory over Sunderland, becoming the first player to score 10 goals in 11 straight seasons.
2013-2014 (Manchester United): Rooney scored twice in a 4-2 Champions League victory against Bayer Leverkusen, which was his 200th goal for Manchester United. Rooney scored two goals for United at West Ham, moving him into third place on the club’s all-time scoring list with 212 goals in all competitions. He finished the season with 17 goals and 10 assists.
2012-2013 (Manchester United): Rooney scored his first goal of the season in a 4-2 home victory over Stoke City, the tally was his 200th club goal. He scored a brace in the Manchester derby at Manchester Stadium on Dec. 9 2012; United won the match 3-2. He bagged another brace just two weeks later in a 2-1 win against Southampton.
2010-2011 (Manchester United): Rooney signed a five-year contract at Manchester United lasting until June 2015. After a brief injury battle he returned to the starting lineup on Nov. 24, 2010 and scored a penalty in a 1-0 road win over Rangers in the Champions League. His first league goal came on Jan. 1, 2011 in a 2-1 victory against West Bromwich Albion. One of Rooney’s most iconic moments of his career came on Feb. 12, 2011, when he scored an overhead bicycle kick in the 78th minute of the Manchester derby match. The strike proved to be the game-winning goal as the match ended 2-1 in favor of United. Rooney went on to say that the goal was the best goal of his career. He scored his first hat trick of the season in a 4-2 road win over West Ham United. He scored two goals in the Champions League group stage match against Otelul Galati and surpassed his former teammate Paul Scholes as the highest-scoring Englishman in Champions League history.
2009-2010 (Manchester United): On Aug. 22, 2009, Rooney scored his 100th club level goal against Wigan Athletic. He scored his first hat trick in three years for the club in a 4-1 away victory against Portsmouth. On Jan. 23, 2010 Rooney scored four goals for the first time in his career in a 4-0 win over Hull City. Rooney was named the 2010 PFA Players’ Player of the Year.
2008-2009 (Manchester United): On Oct. 4, 2008, Rooney became the youngest player to make 200 Premier League appearances when he took the pitch against the Blackburn Rovers. He scored twice in the 5-3 semifinal win over Japanese club Gamba Osaka in the FIFA Club World Cup. He also scored the winning goal as United beat LDU Quito 1-0 in the final. Rooney was awarded the Golden Ball as the best player in the tournament. He finished the season with 20 goals in all competitions (12 league goals).
2007-2008 (Manchester United): Rooney changed his squad number from 8 to 10, last worn by Ruud Van Nistelrooy. After being sidelined by injury for the first six weeks of the season he returned and scored in United’s 1-0 Champions League group stage win over AS Roma on Oct. 2, 2007. Rooney went on to win back-to-back Premier League titles; he finished the season with 18 goals (12 league goals). This season was also the first-ever all-English final in the Champions League competition; United went on the defeat league rivals Chelsea to win the tournament.
2006-2007 (Manchester United): Rooney scored another hat trick against the Bolton Wanderers. Shortly after he signed a two-year contract extension with United that tied Rooney to the Red Devils until 2012. In April 2007, he scored two goals, in an 8-3 aggregate win in the Champions League quarterfinal over AS Roma. Rooney collected his first Premier League title at the end of the 2006-07 season. He finished the season with 14 league goals.
2005-2006 (Manchester United): Rooney captured his first trophy with United in 2005-2006 when they claimed the League Cup. He was named man of the match in the final for scoring two goals in a 4-0 thrashing of Wigan Athletic. Manchester United finished second in the Premier League 2005-06 season. Rooney finished the season with a total of 16 goals in 26 Premier League games. Rooney again won the PFA Young Player of the Year award becoming the first player to do it twice since Robbie Fowler.
2004-2005 (Manchester United): Rooney’s Impressive performances for Everton led to a $35 million transfer to Manchester United on Aug. 31, 2004, for the then 18-year-old; a record at the time for a player under the age of 20. The teenager immediately featured for the Red Devils. At 18 years of age, Rooney became the second youngest player in UEFA Champions League history to score a hat trick in the 6-2 win over Turkey’s Fenerbahçe S.K. on Sept. 28, 2004, which was also his full Manchester United debut. Rooney was Manchester United's top league scorer that season with 11 goals, and was credited with the PFA Young Player of the Year award.
2003-04 (Everton): He scored his first goal of the 2003-04 season in a 2-2 away draw against Charlton Athletic on Aug. 26, 2003. Rooney scored in his 50th league appearance against Birmingham City on Dec. 28, 2003 taking home a 1-0 victory. He scored his first brace in a Premier League game against Southampton in a 3-3 draw on Feb. 21, 2004. In two seasons with the Toffees, Rooney scored 15 goals in 71 appearances.
2002-03 (Everton): Rooney started his professional career with Everton after rising through their youth ranks, making his debut on Aug. 17, 2002, at just 16 years, 9 months and 24 days old. He became the second youngest first-team player in Everton history. Rooney started the fixture and assisted on the game’s opening goal. His first and second senior goals came on Oct. 2, 2002, in a league cup match against Wrexham the contest ended 3-0. Rooney became Everton’s youngest-ever goal scorer at the time. In 2002 Rooney won the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year. Rooney finished his debut season with eight goals in 37 appearances in all competitions for Everton.
On the international stage, Rooney solidified himself as one of the best players to ever represent the England National Team. His impressive displays for Everton as a teenager led to his first call-up to the England National Team at just 17-years-old. On Feb. 12, 2003, Rooney made his England debut against Australia in an international friendly and became the second youngest player in England history to earn a cap. In his sixth appearance for The Three Lions, Rooney became the youngest ever goal scorer for England when he scored in the 2-1 win over Macedonia in a UEFA European Qualifier at 17 years and 317 days old. The forward went on to become the most capped field player in England history (119) and is the all-time leader in goals for The Three Lions (53) after overtaking Sir Bobby Charlton (49) on Sept. 8, 2015, against Switzerland. Rooney has appeared in England’s last three World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014) as well as three UEFA European Championships (2004, 2012, 2016) and captained his country 23 times across all competitions.
